Go to your local registrar’s office (Standesamt), which is associated with your place of birth.
Fill out application form for birth certificate. You may also be able to find these application forms online on your local government’s website.
Provide supporting documents.
Pay the applicable fees and submit your application.
Once the application is approved, the birth certificate will be issued.
- Proof of identity: A passport or a photo ID card.
- Proof of relationship or legitimate interest if the person applying is not the person named on the certificate.
- Proof of jurisdiction if applying from a different city or country.
Most Standesamt offices have online platforms now where you can also apply for a birth certificate.
If you are applying for someone else’s birth certificate, you must prove that you have a legitimate interest.
