What is it?

The Bulgarian identity card is a compulsory identity document issued in Bulgaria. The document is issued by the police on behalf of the Ministry of Interior and is the main form of identification on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria. All Bulgarian citizens are obliged to apply for an ID card immediately after reaching the age of 14.

Who needs it?

Every Bulgarian citizen who is over 14 years old is required to have an identity card. It is compulsory for every Bulgarian citizen to carry their identity card with them at all times and is especially important to have when traveling as it acts as a recognized travel document within most of Europe.

Procedure

  1. Fill out an application form for an ID card, you can find this form online on the official website of the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior.
  2. Prepare all required personal documents.
  3. Submit the application form along with all required documents at the nearest local division of the Ministry of Interior.
  4. Pay the state fee for issuing an ID card.
  5. Provide biometric data (photo, signature, and fingerprints) which would be taken on spot at the local division of the Ministry of Interior.
  6. After all required steps are completed, you have to wait for the processing period.
  7. Pick up your ID card from the local division of the Ministry of Interior where you filed your application. You will be given a deadline for picking it up.
