Guide to Obtaining an Italian Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno)

- Gather all your necessary documents.
- Download the application kit for ‘permesso di soggiorno’ from the Italian Post website here .
- Fill in the forms in the application kit.
- Submit the application kit and the required documents in the post office.
- Pay the required fee on submission of the application.
- You’ll then receive a receipt with a user ID and password to check your application’s status online.
- After submitting the kit, the post office will give you an appointment with the immigration office (Questura) for the fingerprints.
- Attend the appointment and have your fingerprints taken.
- Once your permit is ready, the office will send you an SMS to collect it.
- Copy of your passport
- Detailed photocopy of the visa issued by the Italian Diplomatic-consular representation
- The original letter of invitation if you are visiting family or friends, or the declaration of hospitality
- Two copies of the postal payment receipt for the permit issued
- Four passport-size photos
