Guide to Obtaining an Italian Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno)

Description

What is it?

A residence permit, otherwise known as ‘permesso di soggiorno’, is a legal document that authorizes a foreign national to live in Italy.

Who needs it?

It’s required by non-EU nationals who intend to stay in Italy for more than 90 days.

Procedure

  1. Gather all your necessary documents.
  2. Download the application kit for ‘permesso di soggiorno’ from the Italian Post website here .
  3. Fill in the forms in the application kit.
  4. Submit the application kit and the required documents in the post office.
  5. Pay the required fee on submission of the application.
  6. You’ll then receive a receipt with a user ID and password to check your application’s status online.
  7. After submitting the kit, the post office will give you an appointment with the immigration office (Questura) for the fingerprints.
  8. Attend the appointment and have your fingerprints taken.
  9. Once your permit is ready, the office will send you an SMS to collect it.

Required Documents

  • Copy of your passport
  • Detailed photocopy of the visa issued by the Italian Diplomatic-consular representation
  • The original letter of invitation if you are visiting family or friends, or the declaration of hospitality
  • Two copies of the postal payment receipt for the permit issued
  • Four passport-size photos
