What is it?

Car registration is the process of recording a car’s identification and owner to the national vehicle registry.

Who needs it?

Every individual who purchases a new or used vehicle.

Procedure

  1. Purchase of the vehicle and obtain relevant documents from the previous owner.
  2. To declare the usufruct of the vehicle, you need to request in IMT (The Institute for Mobility and Transport). Refer to this link to begin your declaration.
  3. Once the vehicle is under your name officially, register it online through the “Automobile Online” service on the Justiça.pt page.
  4. If the vehicle is from another country, it must be first subjected to an inspection at any automobile inspection center. Use this link to find an appropriate center.
  5. Once the vehicle passes the inspection, you can proceed to registration following the steps mentioned above.
