Description

What is it?

An identification or ID card, particularly for citizens in Spain, is known as the Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI). It is an official document that all Spanish citizens are required to acquire at an early age, and it serves as a general identification tool and proof of citizenship.

Who needs it?

Any resident or citizen of Spain, including immigrants wanting to acquire official identification.

Procedure

  1. Gather all required documents, including your birth certificate, passport, and proof of Spanish address.
  2. Visit the nearest Policia Nacional office.
  3. Apply for your Certificado de Registro.
  4. After applying, you will receive a Cl@ve. This is a login verification system for easy online access to public services.
  5. Use your Cl@ve to get signed to Sede Electrónica.
  6. Go to Tramites, then DNIe y Certificados, followed by Personas Fisicas and finally the option Solicitar un Certificado.
  7. After finishing this online process, provide your details at the local office where the application was made to complete the registration.

Additional details

The validity of the DNI is unlimited for adults, while minors must renew their DNI every 2 years until 5 years, then every 5 years until they come of age. Be aware that you might be asked to show your DNI by the police at any time. Note that it can take up to a month to finalize the process and receive your DNI. It is advisable to also apply for a Certificado Digital, which grants online access to a quantity of public services.
