Guide to Obtaining a Spanish Passport – Requirements & Procedure

Description

What is it?

A Spanish passport allows for international travel and serves as a proof of citizenship and identity. It is issued by the Spanish government to its citizens.

Who needs it?

Any Spanish citizen planning to travel abroad needs a passport.

Procedure

  1. If you are not yet a Spanish citizen, but qualify for Spanish citizenship by descent or residency, first you need to apply for Spanish nationality. You can read more about it here .
  2. Obtain a DNI (National Identity Document). This can be done at your local police station.
  3. Book an appointment to submit your passport application. This can be done through this link .
  4. At the appointment, submit your application along with the required documents and your previous passport (if applicable).
  5. Pay the passport fee.
  6. Once your application is processed, you will receive your passport.

Required Documents

  • Valid DNI
  • Two recent, identical color photos (32x26mm, with a white, smooth and uniform background, printed on high quality paper, and untouched)
  • Previous passport (if applicable)
  • Proof of payment of passport fee

Additional details

Any Spanish citizen regardless of their age can apply for a Spanish passport, but minors need to be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians. The passport validity period depends on the holder’s age. The validity is 2 years for up to age 5, 5 years for ages 5-30, and 10 years for those over 30.
